Robots That Move - PLAY20090306_pleo

RoboDays brings robots into children's play and releases the surprising potential of robot technology.

In 2009, University College Lillebælt, Designskolen Kolding and Center for Playware collaborated to find new ways of using play to make robots a part of our lives. Here, robot technology is used for everyday tasks and with tongue-in-cheek humour. A number of companies have participated in the work of gathering inspiration for new robot products that use play to perform tasks in new ways.

Hear the people behind the project explain their ideas and see their prototypes at RoboDays robot festival.

Location:
Kulturmaskinen og Farvergården, 5000 Odense C

Time:
Thursday 10th September 9.00 am - 5.00 pm
Friday 11th Sseptember 9.00 am - 6.00 pm
Saturday 12th September 10.00 am - 4.00 pm

Robots That Move - LEARNINGbillede2

Can an octopus teach you how to add fractions? And can you paint with a robot? At the robot festival, you can meet a true maths genius robot that will give all maths teachers grey hair, and you can make a PaintBot paint works of art with just a few commands.

Try out robot technology in a new and lively manner that makes science and technology exciting and tangible. Explore what art, humans and machines have in common. Is robot technology just for scientists or is it much simpler than that? KnowledgeLab suggests some possible answers, and you can decide for yourself.

Experience first-hand how technology can coope-rate with humans and how you can play your way to knowledge that is otherwise difficult to assimilate. For example, the robot octopus can teach you how to add fractions through play.

KnowledgeLab presents the robots, which were developed in cooperation with Mikro Værkstedet A/S and PlayAlive A/S.

Location:
Kulturmaskinen og Farvergården, 5000 Odense C

Time:
Thursday 10th September 9.00 am - 5.00 am
Friday 11th September 9.00 am - 6.00 pm
Saturday 12th September 10.00 am - 4.00 pm

Robots That Move - EDUCATION

RoboDays presents the ultimate interactive sensory room. 85 students from around the world combine robots, sensor technology, teaching and interactive design to provide transformational experiences for young people with social problems by challenging their relationship to their surroundings.

This unique collaboration bridging geographic and professional borders represents the education of to-morrow, where cooperative learning makes it possible for students to create innovative results across borders. With their individual skills and culture, they pave the way for new innovation and idea development.

Come and experience the students' invention and see the result of the global cooperation at Munke Mose. The course of education was conducted by SDE College.

Location:
Munke Mose, 5000 Odense C

Time:
Thursday 10th September 9.00 am - 5.00 pm
Friday 11th September 9.00 am - 6.00 pm
Saturday 12th September 10.00 am - 4.00 pm

Robot Musicrobomusik

At RoboDays' music workshop, you can explore robot music and experiment with musical expressions and cadences in a world of robot-inspired electronic instruments.

Experience how musician and composer Jacob Sikker Remin and his workshop participants create new tones and sounds with unique musical instruments, built from electronic waste. See how the instruments are built and hear their sounds at the music workshop.

You can also experiment with musical building blocks developed by Center for Playware. The building blocks enable you to create your own virtual band and change the musical composition by turning and twisting the blocks.

Shared Robotics - Robots and Modern Art20090827_fernisering4

RoboDays presents the art exhibition "Shared Robotics". See art works that build and transform robots for new purposes, where the relationship between humans and robots leads to new creative expressions.

The exhibit presents four very different robot technology installations, featuring a fusion of technology and art. Some works at the exhibition allow you to develop further on their form, their expression and their technology.

A multi-touch wall at the exhibition gives you historical insight into how robots have been interpreted in art and culture through the ages. You can also find this part of the exhibition at www.sharedrobotics.com, where you can contribute your knowledge about robot technology in a user-based robot encyclopedia that will emerge during the exhibition period.

Location:
Kunsthallen Brandts, 5000 Odense C

Time:
Thursday 10th September 12.00 am - 9.00 pm
Friday 11th September 10.00 am - 5.00 pm
Saturday 12th September 10.00 am - 5.00 pm

The Exhibition runs to 29th November 2009.

PARTICIPATING ARTISTS

Sabrina Raaf (www.raaf.org) resides in Chicago and has previously worked with art robots that interact with their surroundings. For this exhibition, she is working with the robot company Gibotech A/S to create a work in which one of Gibotech's robots is reprogrammed to cut large patterns out of corrugated plastic. Over time, these patterns are transformed into a sculptural installation spreading out over the floor of the exhibition space, as the work changes throughout the exhibition period.

The Danish artists' collective Illutron (www.illutron.dk) is exhibiting a work entitled "N7331227", which brings an old industrial robot to life. Using computer vision, the robot has been programmed with the ability to see and reproduce visitors' drawings on a large wall.

The German artist Ralf Schreiber (www.ralfschreiber.com) experiments with minimal robot technology. Schreiber's work, "Living Particles #58", consists of a room filled with small robots hanging from the ceiling. Both the installation's design and each of the small robots, which can move and make noises, are reduced to a minimum, creating an overall impression of life in a strict order.

Douglas Repetto resides in New York and is represented with the work "Foal" - a very simple, mechanical robot. In its design and movements, "Foal" seems like a newborn foal struggling to control its legs. Several small foals will toddle around the exhibition space. The work is an open prototype that can be built by those who wish to test their robot building skills. Instructional guides to building the robot are available at the exhibition.

Theatre performance"The Anatomy of the Robot"Robottens anatomi

The performance takes place at The Modern Anatomical Theatre, in a combination of dream, reality, theatre and performance. A talented group of actors is featured on stage in Baard Owe, Jeanette Lindbæk Larsen and Morten Steensgaard. In addition to the Border Collie, Sif, and a number of robots, they will be accompanied by physicists, philosophers and robot scientists from the University of Southern Denmark.
